St. Malachy Sacristan Program
All young ladies in 6th—12th grade are invited to participate in our teen sacristan program. Sacristans are responsible for preparing the sacred vessels and vestments used in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. As a sign of their ministry in preparing the altar, the Sacristans carry up the gifts at Mass. Sacristans also ring the outside bells at the Consecration, calling all of the community’s attention to the moment the presence of Christ among us is made real in the Eucharist.
Many female saints throughout history, including St. Therese of Lisieux, were sacristans. St. Therese even wrote a beautiful poem about being a sacristan, including the beautiful verse:
Here below, Our sweet office is to prepare for the altar the bread and wine of the Sacrifice which brings to Earth, Heaven!
A sacristan must be in 6th grade or older and a practicing Catholic. This means she follows God's commandments by participating weekly in Sunday Mass and frequenting the Sacrament of Reconciliation. A sacristan must have received the Baptism, First Reconciliation, and First Holy Communion sacraments.
St. Malachy Altar Server Program
The overall vision of our Altar Servers Ministry is to provide the boys with the opportunity for prayer, fellowship, and formation. It is not a priestly vocation development club, but it helps the boys become familiar with worship at the altar and normalize priesthood in their minds as a viable option.
Monthly training sessions occur on the first Wednesday from 4-6 pm. There is a training session for Christmas and another for Holy Week / Easter. Altar Servers must be practicing Catholics. This means he follows God's commandments by participating weekly in Sunday Mass and frequenting the Sacrament of Reconciliation. An Altar Server must have received the Baptism, First Reconciliation, and First Holy Communion sacraments.
