Week of March 4, 2024

Dear parents,

It’s March and spring is coming! Testing season also begins - -IREAD-3, NWEA, ARK, AND ILEARN. Yes every professional field uses abbreviations and acronyms and education does as well.

As an accredited school, St. Malachy is required to assess students using the IREAD-3 and ILEARN state assessments. These assessments are in accordance with state legislation which is in compliance with the national education law, ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act).  The testing windows are set by the Indiana Department of Education and the Office of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

Here are our common assessment abbreviations and information you may want to be familiar with:

IREAD-3*: Indiana’s Reading Evaluation and Determination for 3rd grade. This is an student assessment designed to measure foundational reading skills based on Indiana Academic Standards through grade three. The intent is to ensure each student receives the appropriate reading remediation based on IREAD-3 test data and their individual learning needs. The testing window is March 4 - 15, 2024.  The summer retake window is May 13 - June 28, 2024.

ILEARN*:  Indiana’s Learning Evaluation and Assessment Readiness Network. ILEARN is the summative accountability assessment for Indiana students in grades three through eight and high school biology. It measures student achievement and growth according to Indiana Academic Standards for English/Language Arts for grades three through eight, Mathematics for grades three through eight, Science for grades four and six, and Social Studies for grade five. For the 2024 - 2025 school year, St. Malachy will pilot the ILEARN icheck-point in place of NWEA.  The testing window is April 15 - May 10, 2024

NWEA: Northwest Evaluation Association.  St. Malachy, as well as many Catholic schools, uses this assessment to measure academic progress in order to quarterly assess our students and provide interventions as necessary. For the 2024 - 2025 school year, St. Malachy will only use NWEA for Kindergarten through 2nd grade students. Each school determines the three testing windows.

ARK: Assessment of Religious Knowledge. This is the annual assessment of student progress in religious education. Students in 2nd grade through 8th grade will be assessed.  The testing window is March 18 - May 11.

School Needs and/or Employment Opportunities

  • A middle school math and middle school science teacher position has been posted.  Math/Science teachers are usually licensed to teach both; therefore, we have teachers on our staff that can teach both. However, we must hire one teacher that is licensed in either math or science. The ideal candidate is a practicing Catholic licensed teacher in mathematics 6th grade through 12th or science grades 6th - 8th grade. The teacher will be responsible for teaching pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry as well as have homeroom responsibilities.

  • Extended day is looking to hire a few people to supervise students after school until 4:00 pm or 5:00 pm. If you know anyone interested, contact Benita Wheeler

  • The Facility Ministry has a position open, see attached.
